You’re enjoying the summer in your charming pier and beam home. Suddenly, there’s an issue with your hardwood flooring that’s coming out of nowhere! What on earth is going on? Why are my floorboards cupping, buckling, tenting, and/or popping up?? Do I have a foundation problem? Can I stop this or fix this???
Homeowners really panic when this flooring problem occurs because it comes on quickly and seemingly without cause.
At Anchor Foundation Repair, we’ve gotten many a call about this exact issue over the past 40+ years and can tell you what’s going on as well as advise you on what to do next. We can tell you right off the bat that it’s not a foundation issue so at least there’s that.
In this article, we will cover the usual cause of these kinds of sudden floor buckling problems and how to deal with them. It’s unfortunately not necessarily a simple fix, so *buckle* up and get ready to hear the hard truth and what to do to handle this crawl space home flooring situation.
What Caused My Sudden Buckling Floor Problem?
First, everyone wants to know what is the cause of this horrifying and sudden floor issue. Several factors simultaneously contribute to the development of this buckling, tenting floorboard problem:
- Hot, humid weather
- Unexpected or out-of-season rainfall
- Poor drainage or ventilation under the home
- Air conditioning on overdrive
Usually in the hot, muggy Texas summers, we stop having rain. Every so often, we DO have summer rain when the temperature and humidity have already reached scorching summer highs (anytime between May and August this could occur). This happened in the summer of 2021 and it happened again this year in 2024.
It *seems nice* to have rain continue into the summer months until it goes wrong for some unsuspecting crawl space homeowners. This atypical summer rainfall causes a unique situation for homeowners in our area when soggy crawl spaces are combined with running AC.
Here’s what happens. It’s hot and humid, so you need your air conditioning. Your AC intake pulls moisture up from underneath the waterlogged home as it’s running. The sucking action of the AC air intake is shockingly powerful. As the under-home moisture passes through your floors, it embeds itself in the floorboards and they begin first to cup along the edges.
Cupping is where the long sides of the boards start to flare up while the middle of the board stays flat. It feels like little ridges on the floor or a ruffled potato chip underfoot. After cupping, then the boards swell if the excess moisture and AC pull continues.
The boards can swell so much that they don’t lay flat anymore because they have expanded beyond the space available for them on the floor. Your flooring begins to tent and pop up into the path of least resistance i.e. the empty space above your floors.
Is This Floor Issue a Foundation Problem?
Foundation issues in a crawl space or pier and beam foundation home are typically caused by soil settlement or movement and/or failing wood materials due to degradation. Even though your floors feel uneven, it’s not the foundation that’s having a problem.
Foundation issues take years to develop and slowly get worse over long periods. This issue develops quickly perhaps over just a few weeks or a month of hot, rainy weather.
It’s your hardwood flooring material that has become waterlogged, unfortunately.
Can Buckling Floors Be Corrected or Prevented?
*Maybe* you can save your floors if they are just cupping and haven’t started to tent, break, or pop up yet, but there’s no guarantee this will stop a process that has already begun.
- Buy a dehumidifier ASAP and run it near the problem flooring area.
- Inspect the crawl space for standing water.
- Take steps to remove any water and dry/ventilate the space as much as possible.
- Contact a flooring expert for advice and possible repairs.
As far as we know, the only way to fix this issue if the boards are tented, popped, and/or broken is to remove and replace the damaged boards.
Can I Keep This Flooring Issue From Happening Again?
In the long term, this situation is caused by excess moisture under the home. I’m sure you want to prevent something like this from *ever* happening again to your nice hardwood floors. Plan to take major steps to evaluate and overhaul your drainage situation.
To make improvements or additions to your drainage systems, look at both drainage outside the footprint of the home as well as moisture management inside the crawl space itself:
- Adding or improving gutters and downspouts, including downspout extensions,
- Yard slope and grading,
- Surface drainage like swales and catch basins,
- Underground drainage like French drains,
- Landscape placement and irrigation management,
- Ventilation improvements,
- Crawl space contouring, and
- Home elevation.
Working on drainage around your home is a slow-going project. Water is hard to control and it always seems to find a way to get someplace you don’t want it. Work methodically and be patient as you move towards a drier environment under your home.
BONUS: Keeping your crawl space dry will also help keep wood rot issues and foundation problems at bay. So just remember you’re working on drainage for overall home health and the prevention of several other problems.
Who Can Fix This Floor Buckling Problem For Me?
Hopefully, your floors can be saved, but flawless repairs or replacement of a small area might not be possible. Depending on the availability of your flooring material, where this problem has occurred, and how much it bothers you, flooring replacement might be in order.
